On Sunday, President Joe Biden sent political shockwaves around the country and to his voters by announcing his withdrawal from the bid for the U.S. election (2024). His social media post just months before the polls threw an element of turmoil in the whole scenario.
Soon after dropping out of the race, President Biden endorsed the name of Vice President Kamala Harris for the same. It remains to be seen if it will become a reality.
President Biden said serving as US president has been “the greatest honor” of his life and that he’s proud of his work done in the last three and a half years, but now it’s time to step out of the race.
Shortly after, he endorsed Vice President Harris. He announced on X, writing, “I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President.”
Currently, President Biden is quarantined at his Delaware home with COVID. Regarding his decision to drop out of the league, he stated that he would speak to the country later this week.
According to George Washington University professor Casey Burgat, the president’s decision to endorse Kamala Harris could complicate the Democratic National Convention.
Burgat further stated, “Remember that she had zero delegates attached to her name; they all went to President Biden.”
However, Vice President Harris said she is resolute to earn the nomination and win in November, writing, “I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party… and unite our nation… to defeat Donald Trump.”
hoping to secure the nomination and win in November.
Former President Donald Trump said in a statement that Biden “was not fit to run for president,” and he also asked for the second debate to be shifted from ABC to the Fox News Channel, which is assumed as “friendlier” to him.
Though the voters in Harris’ hometown are looking forward to her candidacy, to beat Trump, they also think that she must get the nomination as fast as she can.
Regarding race, Harris is the first black woman, someone of South Asian origin to hold the position of vice president. If she defeats Republican candidate Donald Trump in November, she will serve as the first woman president.
Many considered Harris to be the front-runner to succeed Biden on the ticket even before Biden gave his endorsement.
Her national recognition and experience in foreign policy provide her with an advantage over prospective rivals like Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, California. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.
Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. She worked as a beneficiary of the social and racial justice movements that centered on her birthplace and the adjacent Berkeley area at the time.
Amid the news of President Biden stepping back California Governor Gavin Newsom was quick to respond to the news. He took to X to comment on the president’s decision. Newsom wrote, “President Biden has been an extraordinary, history-making president—a leader who has fought hard for working people and delivered astonishing results for all Americans. He will go down in history as one of the most impactful and selfless presidents.”
Governor Gavin Newsom supporters are circulating a polling memo for the Democratic nomination for president.
The California pollster Ben Tulchin wrote in the memo on July 18, addressing Newsom: “Newsom has better net favorability ratings and lower negatives than Biden and Harris.”.
Tulchin, formerly worked for both Newsom and Vice President Kamala Harris, claimed he sent the memo on his initiative out of worry for the party’s future.
“While the future remains unpredictable and there may not be an opportunity for the Governor to run this election, nevertheless we thought it would be helpful if you had relevant data along with key talking points to be able to make the case that Newsom can win should such an opportunity present itself,” Tulchin writes.
